Pet Lovers Opposed to Dirt

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I do love my animals at home.  I do, however, also value a fairly tidy home. I don’t think I’m OCD about the cleanliness of the home, just like to enjoy sitting on a reasonably hair-free sofa.
I am thinking of gathering an online forum (Pet Lovers Opposed to Dirt, PLOD) to discuss and share […]

Tips for the Credit Crunch

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Rescue centres have seen twice the number of animals dumped for re-homing. A sure sign that the credit crunch is affecting our ability to look after our pets. I have written before about what a financial commitment a pet is - £500-700/year for a cat and £1000+ per year for a dog.  I’m sure no […]

Chocolate Labradors

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

In the late 1930’s  Mr Tibshelf, of Tibshelf kennels bred a Labrador that turned out brown instead of yellow or black. A stroke of marketing genius occurred that day when he decided that this would be called a Chocolate Labrador.
Chocolate Labrador, what a better name to conjure warm fluffy feelings of love. A brief look at Chocolate labs registered at our surgery show […]

Why Don’t Dogs Purr?

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Today I was sat with one dog on my knee (not strictly allowed in this household but he caught me at a weak moment) and the other sat on my feet.  I was able to stroke one dog with each hand,  which is why the old adage 2 hands, 2 dogs is so true.
These dogs […]

Loosing a Loved One

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I spoke a few weeks ago of the vet’s perspective of putting a beloved pet to sleep. It’s not something that any vet enjoys doing but is a form of treatment for intractable suffering.
This week we lost Molly, my parent’s beloved lurcher. The painful decision to put her to sleep was made.
So I saw things from the […]

My letter to John

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I’ve never written a fan letter before but have to make an exception for John Mayer.  His music is fantastic.  It’s generally mellow; great to destress to after a long day squeezing anal glands and it also contains very honest lyrics; important for a girl that finds herself covered in gross stuff on a daily basis.
What actually […]

Death

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

Facing into death isn’t an easy thing to do and it seem s particularly unacceptable to talk about it in our culture.  There are a whole load of other issues this raises, like eating meat without accepting where it comes from or the harder subject of accepting our own mortality.
When I meet people for the […]

Italian Affairs

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Been on hols in Italy for a week. A few animal events occurred
SUN 29/4/07 Met Capri’s friendliest inhabitant:
I named her Donatella. Capri is full of stuck-up people posing and pretending that they have just bought a 20K pair of shoes from Louis Vitton. My meeting with Donatella came about quite by accident as I was wondering through a garden that was […]
